One important aspect of being a nationally competitive hockey program is its billet families (host families). The Team Maryland Midget AAA program is currently looking to match our out-of-town student athletes with great people who are enthusiastic about the sport of hockey and the opportunity to become a billet family.
Billet families open their homes to the young athletes, easing their transition and providing them with a home away from home. Becoming a billet family can be a rewarding experience and many long lasting friendships develop between players and their billets. Players stay in billets’ home during the school year from August through June. During the day the player is at school and in the evenings the player is usually busy with either hockey or homework.
The billeting concept is something of a hockey tradition, and is especially important at the Midget and Junior level of hockey. It involves host families opening their homes to out-of-state or out-of-country players, and provides an opportunity for these young men to pursue the next step in their developing hockey careers. The billet programs also allows some individuals to complete high school educations, take college preparatory classes, and pursue part-time employment in the local community.
During this time bonding takes place among the entire family. In turn, lasting relationships are forged. The billet home becomes a player's second home and the community becomes a second hometown. Billeting is a very rewarding experience and the overwhelming joy a family receives from opening their hearts and homes to a fine young man who is trying to achieve his dream of playing at the next level.
